2018 Top 100 Games of All-Time - #40-31

For a brief recap of how I came up with my list, refer back to my previous post:

Here we go with #40-31! Going to start rushing these as the end of the year is coming!

#40 - Burgle Bros.

Right now, this is probably my favorite co-operative game out there right now with a fantastic theme and intuitive mechanics, even if I find it difficult to win! It definitely captures the feeling of a heist and the guard AI that you play against is well implemented.

#39 - Small World

This is a fantastic area control game which is almost light enough to be a gateway game.  The combinations of powers and factions are almost endless and add significantly to the replayability. A steady stream of interesting expansions also helps as well.

#38 - Galaxy Trucker

Building your own spaceship and then watching it get smashed to pieces - there is no other game like it and I am surprised that no one else has tried because this game is so much fun. I've only touched a bit of the many expansions as well so I have a lot to look forward to still.

#37 - The Manhattan Project

This is a middleweight worker placement game with a fun theme and interesting decisions that is a good stepping stone to the heavier ones at the top of these rankings. It has spawned numerous spin-offs and sequels, all of which I am eager to try.

#36 - 7 Wonders: Duel

After playing this wonderful two-player card drafting game, I was motivated to go back to the original which I think I may have underappreciated. The drafting in this game is a tactical puzzle and the addition of the Pantheon expansion helped add to the strategy and depth.

#35 - Smash Up

This great card game keeps its rank high with the continuous release of new factions and recent app version. The problem that it has and which might contribute to its future drop is that at higher player counts it is difficult to keep track of all the text, and there is a lot of text.

#34 - King of New York

This re-implementation of King of Tokyo adds a bit more strategy so I like it much more, but I still appreciate the simpler ruleset of the gateway original. For me, the addition of area control adds further depth and the choice to destroy buildings and tanks is very thematic and fun!

#33 - Bang! The Dice Game

This dice reimplementation of the card game Bang! completely replaced the original for me, which always ends up outstaying its welcome. This dice version is much quicker and more fun while capturing the feel of the series.

#32 - Innovation

Although a bit tough to teach, this is one of my favorite card games where you slowly build up a civilization based on technology and clash with other players by using overpowered cards to try to defeat other overpowered cards. The numerous endgame and victory conditions can keep everyone feeling involved until the very end.

#31 - Suburbia

The best city-building game I have played yet, but I do like it a bit less than Castles of Mad King Ludwig - the visual presentation of hex cities is lacking when compared to sprawling castles and there is a bit too much tracking required. However, the theme pours through in the tile adjacency and the difficulty of expanding your city once your population gets high. A lot of fun!

Review #27: Ultimate Werewolf: Deluxe Edition

# of Players:  5-75 Playtime:  30-60 Minutes Core Mechanic:  Deduction Theme:  Werewolf Type:  Party Weight:  Light Year:  2014 Rating: 7.5* This was the first social deduction game that I played and the most memorable social deduction moments may have come from playing this game - and I may never play it again. I'll elaborate on that more in a bit, but it in no way reflects on the quality of the game, which is very, very good. This game opened up the entire genre to me which is now a party staple and most deduction games can probably trace a big part of their game back to Werewolf. I might have played Mafia a couple times with a deck of regular playing cards, which is very similar to Werewolf, but the fact that I'm not certain just shows how much of an impact Werewolf had by comparison. There are two teams in this game - Werewolves and Villagers. The goal for the villagers is to eliminate the werewolves while the goal for...

Expansion Mini-Review #2: Hive: Ladybug/Mosquito/Pillbug

The three mini expansions for Hive are even too small to review on their own in this format so I have lumped them together. In my opinion, Ladybug is the weakest of the three while Pillbug is the strongest and Mosquito is somewhere in the middle. Let's explore why! Ladybug Per the BoardGameGeek description, "The Ladybug moves three spaces; two on top of the Hive, then one down." This is a good piece because it can slip into the spots that are almost completely surrounded and being able to climb onto the hive gives it a lot of flexibility. When I mentioned earlier that it is the weakest of the three, it is only because it is not as interesting as the other two. The piece is still very powerful in terms of maneuverability, especially compared to the Spider which must move around the outside of the hive with its three space move. Mosquito Once the Mosquito is placed into the Hive, it copies the ability of any piece that it touches. For example, if it begins its tur...

Review #34: The Resistance - Avalon

# of Players:  5-10 Playtime:  30-60 Minutes Core Mechanic:  Deduction Theme:  Medieval Type:  Party Weight:  Light Year:  2012 Rating: 9* After I discovered Ultimate Werewolf and played it many times, I started looking out for other social deduction games. The Resistance was a game that was just released and was receiving rave reviews. Of course, the game I am reviewing in this post isn't The Resistance but instead its follow-up The Resistance: Avalon; still, I thought it would be helpful to provide a bit of background. Anyway, my original plays of The Resistance fell flat for the group I was playing with but I saw the potential based on the rules and was still looking to try it some more. Then I found out about the Avalon re-theme and that it added some special characters to help boost the game a bit. There are two factions in the game - Good and Evil. To win the game, members of Good must complete three quests successfu...
