New Discoveries - March 2019

Again, I was super busy and not able to complete my February list in time for the end of the month, so I will try to shuffle the way I do things in the future to try to get April done in time!

The Quacks of Quedlinberg: The Herb Witches

Quacks of Quedlinberg quickly became one of my most anticipated games once I played and thoroughly enjoyed Ganz Schon Clever. I recently played it and it is everything it was hyped up to be, making me very excited for this expansion.

Corinth

The big Days of Wonder release this year is a roll-and-write! This truly is the age of the roll-and-write. Based on the company's track record, it is likely that this will be one of the most well-produced roll-and-write games made to date.

Tuki

The next big game from the makers of the popular gateway games Azul and Reef, this one follows the same four-letter naming convention and instead of laying tiles down on a grid, you will be building up patterns vertically. It looks like they are about to have another success on their hands.

The City

Although this isn't a new game, there is a new edition on Kickstarter of this game that was always on my radar. From the designer of Race for the Galaxy, one of my favourite card games, I was originally excited for this game but cooled when the reviews were a bit mixed. Still, the new edition looks great and I've always had a soft spot for city building games.

The Champion of the Wild

Shut Up and Sit Down recently released a video review and playthrough of this recently released party game where you take a team of animals and compete in ridiculous events against each other. I'm hoping that it plays as well as the videos showed it does because I just backed the new Kickstarter.

Doppelt So Clever!

The sequel to my most played game ever, Ganz Schon Clever, I cannot wait to see what this brings to the table. Of course, this is a bit of a cheat because the app was just recently released and I have been playing this non-stop, but since it is new I thought I would just add it to the list.

Century: A New World

The final game in the Century series, a series that I have yet to play even though I have heard so many good things about it. At this point, I might as well wait for the final entry to be released before diving in. The fact that you can combine the games has always been interesting to me.

Wavelength

A party game by Wolfgang Warsch? Considering his track record, this is almost a must-buy. It is co-designed by the designer of Monikers, another well-received party game. It is on Kickstarter, looks very interesting, and the only thing holding me back is the high shipping cost to Canada.

Star Wars: Outer Rim

A new Star Wars game from Fantasy Flight Games themed around bounty hunters seems like the perfect recipe for a successful game. Although I still haven't played Rebellion, I hope this is a worth follow-up.

Keyforge: Age of Ascension

Although I still don't own any Keyforge decks, I did enjoy the play of the game I was able to experience at SHUX '18 and look forward to playing it more. New cards that this newly announced set adds to the game can only make it better.

Review #27: Ultimate Werewolf: Deluxe Edition

# of Players:  5-75 Playtime:  30-60 Minutes Core Mechanic:  Deduction Theme:  Werewolf Type:  Party Weight:  Light Year:  2014 Rating: 7.5* This was the first social deduction game that I played and the most memorable social deduction moments may have come from playing this game - and I may never play it again. I'll elaborate on that more in a bit, but it in no way reflects on the quality of the game, which is very, very good. This game opened up the entire genre to me which is now a party staple and most deduction games can probably trace a big part of their game back to Werewolf. I might have played Mafia a couple times with a deck of regular playing cards, which is very similar to Werewolf, but the fact that I'm not certain just shows how much of an impact Werewolf had by comparison. There are two teams in this game - Werewolves and Villagers. The goal for the villagers is to eliminate the werewolves while the goal for...

Review #12: A Few Acres of Snow

# of Players: 2 Playtime:  2-3 Hours Core Mechanic: Deck Building/Area Control Theme:  18th Century North America Type: War Weight:  Heavy Year:  2011 Rating: 8* After discovering how fantastic a two-player game could be with Twilight Struggle, I was in search of something similar.  Around this time, A Few Acres of Snow was released and had just made its way into the Top 50 on BGG.  There was a lot of hype surrounding this release and I gave in, especially as people were calling this Martin Wallace’s take on Dominion, which was a game that I really liked at the time. Set in North America during the 17th and 18th centuries, one player is the British Empire while the other player is France.  The game is played over a map with each player building up a deck of cards consisting of either empire or location cards.  Location cards will be used to settle new villages, upgrade villages, build fortifications, and siege your op...

Review #13: Ora et Labora

# of Players:  1-4 Playtime:  2-3 Hours Core Mechanic:  Worker Placement Theme:  Medieval Type: Euro Weight:  Heavy Year:  2011 Rating: 9* By the time this game came out, both Agricola and Le Havre were two of my favorite games and because of this, Uwe Rosenberg was probably my favorite game designer at the time and likely still is. Therefore, the hype I created for myself surrounding this release was massive. In the end, this game was full of ideas that were new to me at the time, including the tile placement, production wheel, and interesting worker placement mechanics, but there was something about the game that held it back from hitting the same highs that his previous games did. As with most, if not all, Uwe Rosenberg games, the winner is the player with the most victory points. The game is played over several rounds with each round consisting of five phases: return workers if possible, rotate production wheel, settlement ...
