New Discoveries - April 2019

Talisman: Kingdom Hearts Edition

I've heard about Talisman and from what I know, it is a decent gateway game. However, I love the Kingdom Hearts IP and putting that layer on an established game may make this an instant purchase for me.

Walking in Burano

This is a gorgeous looking game. This also reminds me of the company's other big board game, Burano, which I have not played yet but purchased on theme alone. I think this will likely hit the table first since it is much easier to get a card game played these days.

Taverns of Tiefenthal

Another big game from Wolfgang Warsch? Sign me up now! All of his games have been hits with me and this one is no exception featuring a very fun theme of running your own tavern. This instantly is one of my most anticipated games of the year.

Key Market II

A new Kickstarter that is re-visiting another classic entry into the "Key" series, I might not back this one because it does not reach my Kickstarter thresholds but will definitely be keeping an eye on the end product.

Floor Plan

From the creators of Welcome To... comes a new game where instead of building streets, you are drawing rooms in a house! It looks a bit like a combination between Railroad Ink and Welcome To..., but with a theme that is more appealing than either. Consider me sold on this.

Age of Steam: Deluxe Edition

A new Kickstarter for the classic Age of Steam game. I have always really liked Steam and never really thought about trying Age of Steam, considering that Steam was a re-implementation of the same system and the whole controversial history behind the publishing of Age of Steam. Well, that controversy seems to have been laid to rest and I decided to look into Age of Steam a bit more and it seems that it is a more unforgiving version of Steam. That seems like just the type of game I would enjoy!

Namiji

This is a new game that looks like it is set in the Tokaido universe, but instead of walking down a path and taking actions, players will be taking a boat around to take actions. It appears to use the same system as Tokaido where you cannot turn back. I rather enjoy Tokaido for the feel it evokes, even if it isn't the best game out there. As such, I will keep an eye out on this one when it is released.

Root: Underworld

An expansion to arguably the biggest hit of 2018 is big news indeed. This is on Kickstarter now and though I still haven't played my copy of Root, I will definitely be backing this as Root just looks like a game I will thoroughly enjoy and additional factions to add to the asymmetrical puzzle is a plus.

Subtext

It seems like Wolfgang Warsch is on every update. This is a new party game where players are trying to draw images to get their partner to guess the word correctly without allowing other players to guess. As a twist, the person drawing does not know who their partner is. I'm not 100% sold on the mechanics as it sounds a bit tricky, but I have faith in Warsch.

Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker

This is a new social deduction game themed around Game of Thrones by the design team for Clank!, which I've heard is a really good deckbuilder, so there is some good pedigree behind this. The theme definitely interests me as I feel that is a really strong component required to get new games of this genre to the table.

Review #27: Ultimate Werewolf: Deluxe Edition

# of Players:  5-75 Playtime:  30-60 Minutes Core Mechanic:  Deduction Theme:  Werewolf Type:  Party Weight:  Light Year:  2014 Rating: 7.5* This was the first social deduction game that I played and the most memorable social deduction moments may have come from playing this game - and I may never play it again. I'll elaborate on that more in a bit, but it in no way reflects on the quality of the game, which is very, very good. This game opened up the entire genre to me which is now a party staple and most deduction games can probably trace a big part of their game back to Werewolf. I might have played Mafia a couple times with a deck of regular playing cards, which is very similar to Werewolf, but the fact that I'm not certain just shows how much of an impact Werewolf had by comparison. There are two teams in this game - Werewolves and Villagers. The goal for the villagers is to eliminate the werewolves while the goal for...

Expansion Mini-Review #2: Hive: Ladybug/Mosquito/Pillbug

The three mini expansions for Hive are even too small to review on their own in this format so I have lumped them together. In my opinion, Ladybug is the weakest of the three while Pillbug is the strongest and Mosquito is somewhere in the middle. Let's explore why! Ladybug Per the BoardGameGeek description, "The Ladybug moves three spaces; two on top of the Hive, then one down." This is a good piece because it can slip into the spots that are almost completely surrounded and being able to climb onto the hive gives it a lot of flexibility. When I mentioned earlier that it is the weakest of the three, it is only because it is not as interesting as the other two. The piece is still very powerful in terms of maneuverability, especially compared to the Spider which must move around the outside of the hive with its three space move. Mosquito Once the Mosquito is placed into the Hive, it copies the ability of any piece that it touches. For example, if it begins its tur...

Review #34: The Resistance - Avalon

# of Players:  5-10 Playtime:  30-60 Minutes Core Mechanic:  Deduction Theme:  Medieval Type:  Party Weight:  Light Year:  2012 Rating: 9* After I discovered Ultimate Werewolf and played it many times, I started looking out for other social deduction games. The Resistance was a game that was just released and was receiving rave reviews. Of course, the game I am reviewing in this post isn't The Resistance but instead its follow-up The Resistance: Avalon; still, I thought it would be helpful to provide a bit of background. Anyway, my original plays of The Resistance fell flat for the group I was playing with but I saw the potential based on the rules and was still looking to try it some more. Then I found out about the Avalon re-theme and that it added some special characters to help boost the game a bit. There are two factions in the game - Good and Evil. To win the game, members of Good must complete three quests successfu...
